First Day of Kurukshetra War : Episode 131

Recap of Previous Episode :

Krishna teaches Arjuna the eternal nature of the soul and the principles of karma yoga — action without attachment. He commands Arjuna to rise and fight to uphold dharma, reveals His divine cosmic form, and restores Arjuna’s clarity. Arjuna takes up his bow, ready for battle.

Yudhishtra Steps Down from Chariot

Just when Krishna raises the Panchajanya, Yudhishtra steps down from his chariot and begins walking toward the Kaurava army. Silence spreads across Kurukshetra. The conches falter. Warriors freeze. Sanjaya’s voice trembles as he narrates this moment to Dhritarashtra, awestruck and breathless.

Dhritarashtra assumes Yudhishtra seeks truce — that he cannot bear to fight against his kin.

Seeking Blessings

Duryodhana and Dushasana exchange scornful looks, wondering what game is being played. Before anyone can speak, Yudhishtra bows before Bhishma.

He expresses sorrow that destiny has forced them into battle. Bhishma places his blessings on Yudhishtra’s head: “Victory is yours. Krishna stands with you — how can you be defeated?”

Yudhishtra walks next to Drona. With emotion in his voice, Drona blesses him and says: “Fight without hesitation. And may Arjuna pierce my heart — the Guru Dakshina I cherish.”

Krupacharya blesses him as well.

With blessings gathered, Yudhishtra returns to his chariot.

Bhishma Offers the Last Choice

Bhishma raises his voice across the battlefield. He announces that anyone may withdraw if they wish — illness, fear, conflict of dharma, or unwillingness are valid reasons. Anyone may even switch sides for the sake of conscience.

Yuyutsu turns to Vikarna: “Right and wrong stand before us. We must choose truth.” Vikarna shakes his head. He will not abandon Duryodhana, though he knows the path is sinful.

Yuyutsu steps away, bows before Bhishma, and walks toward the Pandava army. Yudhishtra welcomes him. Duryodhana burns with fury, but Shakuni restrains him with whispers of strategy.

War Begins

Conches thunder again. Drums shake the earth. Arrows rain like storms.
Bhishma fights like a raging lion; the Pandava armies bend beneath his onslaught.

Sanjaya narrates each clash vividly to Dhritarashtra:

Satyaki battles Kritavarman — both Yadavas, but divided by choice. Satyaki fights for Krishna and dharma, while Kritavarman stands bound by duty to the Narayani army pledged by Krishna to the Kauravas.

  • Shikhandi against Ashwatthama
  • Drupada against Vikarna and Jayadratha
  • Drishtadyumna against Drona
  • Bhima against Duryodhana
  • Dushasana against Nakula
  • Yudhishtra against Shalya

The ground reddens.
Prince Uttara of Virata falls to Shalya.
His brother Sweta is slain by Bhishma.

The war has begun.
