- Mahābhārata was narrated by Vaishampāyana at the snake sacrifice of Janamejaya, the son of Parikshit and the great grandson of Arjuna the Pandava.

- King Janmejaya performs Sarpa satra yagna, which is supervised by Sage Vaishampayana. Most serpents, except Takshaka, fall into the sacrificial fire.

- Janmejaya what is dharma and what is adharma: is there a grey area which is regarded as dharma by one and adharma by the other? Mahabharata itself raises many such questions; it is quoted and misquoted; it is often interpreted in myriad ways which are often incorrect. Sage Vyasa narrates the story and asks the viewers to pay close attention to various subtle nuances of dharma.
