Shikhandini Runs Away From The Nuptial Chambers : Episode 46

Recap of Previous episode : Bhishma confronts Dhritarashtra about secret political actions after seeing Duryodhana’s covert preparations. In Ekachakrapura, the Pandavas witness the tragic tribute demanded by Bakasura, and Kunti volunteers Bhima to take the Brahmana’s place. In Vidarbha, Rukmini openly declares her love for Krishna despite Rukmi arranging her marriage to Sisupala. In Panchala, Drupada recalls Shikhandini’s birth and Shiva’s prophecy that she will one day become male and bring about Bhishma’s downfall.

Shakuni’s Strategy and Dhritarashtra’s Dilemma

Nilavan asks Shakuni why he exposed Duryodhana’s questionable activities to Dhritarashtra when it only creates friction in the palace. Shakuni smiles and says his strategy is to “pinch the baby and rock the cradle,” meaning he wants Dhritarashtra to see how far his son will go to fulfill his ambitions. His own aim remains constant: to see Duryodhana crowned king.

In the palace, Dhritarashtra and Gandhari confront Shakuni. Gandhari refuses to believe her son acts without guidance from elders. Shakuni remarks that Duryodhana only mirrors Dhritarashtra’s own actions from the past. Then he subtly suggests that, now that the Pandavas are presumed dead, it is time to crown Duryodhana.

Dhritarashtra is delighted but cautious. He dismisses the idea of consulting Vidura but decides to speak to Bhishma, the senior-most authority. Shakuni reluctantly agrees.

Turmoil in Ekachakra

Yudhishtra and the others return from their alms-rounds and find Bhima standing beside a bullock cart piled with food, crowds gathering around him. Some villagers mourn his fate and blame themselves for letting an atithi be sacrificed. Others argue that sending a guest to face Bakasura violates sacred duty.

Yudhishtra rushes inside to confront Kunti, shocked that she allowed Bhima to volunteer himself. The Brahmana’s family—previously prepared to sacrifice one of their own—now wrestle with relief, guilt, and helplessness. The entire village watches silently, torn between moral failure and survival.

Shikhandin’s Identity and the Marriage Crisis

Drupada and Prishata watch their daughter Shikhandin train like a warrior. Though proud of her skill, Prishata fears for her marriage prospects. Shikhandin remains composed, recalling her past life as Amba and Shiva’s boon that she would one day bring about Bhishma’s death.

Proposals arrive from many kings. Confused, Drupada prays for guidance. Narada appears, reminding him that Shiva’s instruction must be followed —Shikhandin must marry a woman. But he warns that challenges will arise.

Narada negotiates with King Hiranyavarman, who agrees to give his daughter in marriage. The wedding takes place. Shikhandin avoids intimacy. On the fifth day, milk spills on Shikhandin, and as the princess brushes it off she accidentally touches Shikhandin’s chest and realizes the truth—Shikhandin is a woman.

She runs out screaming. King Hiranyavarman accuses Drupada of deceit and summons his army. Shikhandin hides in shame and turmoil, telling her parents she must leave and seek the masculinity destined for her.

Narada tells Hiranyavarman that unless Shikhandin is found, nothing can be proved. The matter remains suspended, waiting for Shikhandin’s return.
