After slaying Susharma, Arjuna and Krishna are on the way to the home camp. They see a boy laid on the pyre with a man wailing over the death and insisting on dying along with the dead son, and another man pacifying the grieving father. Seeing Arjuna, the man (Narada) who was pacifying the father (Indra), requests that he bring the father to his senses. Arjuna consoles the father and says that he has to come to terms with the death, because it is irreversible. With some persuasion, the father accepts to face the situation. Krishna, who is a part to the drama, smiles knowingly.
The air is grim at the camp. Subhadra and Uttara are inconsolable. Subhadra asks why the Pandava elders let a mere boy face a grave situation alone. No explanation, no 'eye for eye' talk can calm her. Arjuna and Krishna arrive. It takes some time for Arjuna to realize that his son has been killed. As the entire episode is narrated to him, Arjuna is infuriated beyond measure. He blames Yudhishtra for gambling, which is the source for all the troubles the Pandavas have faced so far. Yudhishtra is calm and owns up his mistakes. Arjuna wants to kill himself, and when stopped by everybody, he rushes to kill Jayadratha. Krishna follows him and stops him from this mad act. Arjuan swears that he will kill Jayadratha before sunset, or else, he will immolate himself.
Duryodhana lights his son Lakshmana's pyre. His stoic appearnce worries Dushasana and Shakuni. Duryodhana says that his son attained veera swarga by fighting with Abhimanyu who was equal to Arjuna in dexterity. He thanks Jayadratha for making this feesible and assures him full protection against Arjuna. Jayadratha thanks Duryodhana for providing an opportunity to avenge his disgrace. He thanks Drona and Karna for being there on his side. Karna expresses his reservations against killing a warrior by outnumbering and surrounding him, and hence he is not able to fully rejoice with him. Duryodhana understands his predicament fully and thanks him again for supporting him.
